Look, if your movie is going to hinge on references to All About Eve AND A Streetcar Named Desire, you better be able to back that up. Well, Almodóvar backs it up. These references (a film about theater, and a play famously adapted to screen) immediately suggest a sort of theatricality, a heightened alternate reality, where coincidence and chance are to be expected.
Far from feeling contrived, these melodramatic stakes just deepened…

At some point early in the movie, I realized that Tilda Swinton looked exactly like David Bowie, and I couldn’t unsee it
Despite some admittedly clunky and contrived plot machinations, this movie easily succeeded in what felt like its primary mission: leaving me deeply unsettled. From the film’s opening shots, Soderbergh creates a captivatingly creepy atmosphere that lingers well beyond its disturbing finale.
If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider pregaming this one with a Dramamine….
