I think that Paul Mescal was too casual in the role of Lucius. His performance felt too far into realism and not enough of a spectacle. I did enjoy Denzel haunching over people to display his power.
It felt a bit flimsy how easy centuries of tradition were overturned when the power of one of the strongest nations at the time was given over to a gladiator merchant.
This film was a predictable and formulaic, but it was a fun time capsule in 90's American style. I enjoyed Tom Hank's hair cut, he played his part as a father very well it seemed effortless at times, like he was just being himself. I thought Meg Ryan was a compelling journalist. Her narrative seems unlikely as the film points out it draws parallels between them and 'An affair to remember' and I thought this was an interesting plot guidance tool.
This film is for Tom Hanks fans. A heartwarming gentle romp through the desert. There was grit in their endeavours however their stories are not worth following. I would not watch the news of world unless you are trapped by a lovely gal who is asleep on you.
