Three stars is kind of an average of all the reactions I had while watching this movie. Overall, Hooper's throw-everything-at-the-wall approach is more than a little exhausting. But if you take each piece on its own, there's something buoyantly refreshing about the risk-taking. The practical effects are fantastic, the score is rousing, and many of the performances from respected thespians are impressively game, despite the silliness of it all. I did this one as part of a watch party, so…

In the wake of David Lynch's passing, I'm inclined to be generous toward weirdness today. Beau Is Afraid is not a film I'll ever watch again, but it is a film I can say I enjoyed to a certain degree. I allowed it to take me on a journey, appreciating each piece on its own terms without trying too hard to analyze it.

This reminds me in some ways of Carnival of Souls. Is it a misunderstood art film, competently made despite budget constraints? Or a misguided flop that happens to have some great lighting and visual imagery? The 70s were great for this kind of shit.

The main character, Lila, is supposed to be 13 years old, but she looks 17 (and good news--she is!). This is fortunate considering the way every other character in the movie sexualizes her. I'd put this…

Fortunately, I was able to go into this movie without knowing too much, despite seeing so many positive responses from people I follow in the movie/horror community. For the first twenty minutes or so, I really had no idea where this was going nor was I sure what to think about it. There's a long, single-take sequence in a courtroom that's mainly talking, the opening speeches by the prosecution and defense for a grisly murder trial involving snuff films sold…
