Love Bong’s critiques of capitalism. This one isn’t subtle about the exploitation of the working class and nature. Mark Ruffalo and Robert Pattinson both play hilarious caricatures. The bleak world builds a more expansive dystopia than Snowpiercer.
The script is a mess though. It jumps between narratives and exposition - the title credits oddly appear 20 minutes in. But there’s enough visual entertainment to distract from it.
This film is available to watch on YouTube but the quality isn’t great and the subtitles at times invisible so you better be fluent in Cuban Spanish. Love the mixed formats employed in this film to create a docu-drama slice of life of revolutionary Cuba
Great to see a little bit of the EZLN movement on screen but feels very much like an outsider trying to explain the history and current situation. The director chooses her own narration over first hand accounts for the most part and doesn’t situate the first hand accounts she shows within the context.
This film hits differently when you know what happens in the 8-9 years following the events in this film.
