pls don’t watch this without first watching the series. like seriously, this movie relies on u having first watched the series - and having first grappled with all the themes and funny metaphors packed within - even tho it’s arguably… a retelling? or maybe it’s a sequel? it’s ikuhara and he loves to fuck with us!!!
while i prefer the series’ telling of events, i do think this movie adds some interesting new wrinkles - especially when taken as an extension of the series or at least an extension of the themes therein.
a fun, gorgeous watch and a satisfying cap to the utena experience ^_^

There's Something About Mary 1998
entertained, some good laughs (mostly for the physical comedy), but i feel like this movie's aged in a way where a lot of the jokes inspire cringes instead of laughs.
the movie pushes mary as like... the perfect male fantasy: she likes watching football and plays golf and loves eating meat. hard to relate to as a flaming homo.

maybe this isnt actually a 4 1/2 star movie, i just really enjoyed the experience of watching it.
a beautiful crybaby lion, a corporate conspiracy, a billionaire CEO who wears a glove that fires knives out the fingertips for some reason… Oh yeah, robot locusts that strip the flesh off birds midflight and their bones fall to the earth.
this movie is wild and the experience of watching it with a friend and screaming together was so fun.
