I like that whenever Bong makes an English language movie he makes sure it’s extra dumb for us. There’s so much Trump in Ruffalo’s character, down to the mugging and the voice and the red hats and crashing out after a botched assassination attempt (crazy Megalopolis parallel, what were they cooking), but he’s also Musk and Yoon and Perón? Same shit really. Sweet movie. Wish it were ever a little clearer about what it wants to be doing. Madcap but…

Everybody calls Jia “observational” but I don’t think the term captures how loaded and powerful some of these frames are and the way the little extra bit of distance heightens the melodrama. The blocking and the precise way people move. When the camera follows them and when it doesn’t. That single shot on the wall with them trading places and stepping in or out of view together. What a picture. So few people talk about what development and alienation feel…

No thoughts, head empty, but an insane commitment to the bit. Most unpleasant foley work I’ve ever heard. Half the budget went to fluids. I don’t think I’m selling this well but please believe that I liked it. This would be a 5 star movie at like 90 minutes long without the food stuff.

Super frustrating movie, hope I warm to it on rewatch. The last act is so good. But somehow the rest accrues the same problems the Lynch movie does in tone, pacing, repetition, acting?? Villeneuve has a clear, strict style and it’s too rigid to handle the wild swings in tone he needs to make. Blocking a scene of several people outside is hard for anyone but he’s just not up to it and it turns out that’s half the movie. All the thudding intensity of the first with none of the momentum.
