God this felt like such a sequel. Exact same structure as the first one: The island sings a song together -> Moana sings her introspective solo -> Maui sings a knockoff of "You're Welcome" to introduce himself into the plot -> The minor villain who captured Maui gets their song -> etc, etc, etc. Its the same movie riddled with uninspired parodies of the songs that made the first film so memorable. That said, there were redeeming moments and that Bat Lady's song wasn't bad.
Super derivative, surprisingly good. Anything with a Lin Manuel Miranda soundtrack gets at least 3 stars.
Holyfuckingshitholyfuckingshitholyfuckingshit. This is single handedly the WORST movie I have ever seen in theaters. I bet you’re thinking to yourself “Oh, he just didn’t get it.” No, I got it. I understand the message they were trying to send. If only there was a way to send it without showing me 2 hours and 21 minutes of Emma Stone having graphic sex with deformed goblins. I will say the movie was funny. I did laugh multiple times throughout the movie.…
Rewatched this movie and appreciated it so much more. The visuals of the spacing guild ships, Caladan, and Sand Worms were sublime and lovecraftian— completely immersing me in Frank Herbert’s world. The film is remarkably faithful to the source material, with my only gripe being the exclusion of the nuanced internal political warfare and espionage tropes that are so characteristic of the book. I do understand how difficult that would be to adapt from the book format, especially with the limited runtime, so my rating reflects that. Overall, one of the best and most ambitious science fiction book adaptions that has ever been made. 🪱/10
