I loved absolutely everything about this film. It was Picture of Dorian Gray x Requiem for a Dream through the lens of an Aphex Twin video. Really impressive filmmaking. A bunch of different departments at the top of their respective games coming together to make a cohesive, singular masterpiece. It deserves a theatrical viewing. Coralie Fargeat deserves all the awards and I will be first in line for whatever she does next!

This was incredible to look at and a really FUN watch, so how did I leave disappointed? Because the bones of maybe the best Alien movie to date were there, but the continued “video gamification” of film really chaps my ass!  There could not have possibly been a path to less character backstory or development - it was “clear a stage and move on!” BUT I gotta say, those stages rocked! Really glad I saw it in a packed IMAX house. I’m not sure my rating would have been as high otherwise.

    What an unbelievably condescending film!

The underlying “Red State people are people too!” moral is immediately cut off at the knees and the supporting cast is treated with so much contempt that any efforts at showing their humanity make it feel like the lead is watching a nature documentary or visiting a zoo.

The final act nearly turns into something interesting (albeit a totally different movie). Instead ::MILD SPOILER ALERT:: they take a timid, anxious, wreck of a man, so…

I saw this film at the Phoenix Film Festival presumably in 2011 or 2012 and I really loved it and think about it a lot. Weird as hell, but strangely touching, with a ton of super fun performances. Among my favorites of that year. I’d love to see it again and I’d love to show it to some pals, but it seems to be “lost.” Anybody have any leads?
