One of the best depictions in a film of what solidarity actually means. I've seen this movie so many times and I cry every single time.

An absolutely essential reminder that the labour movement needs to rediscover robust and radical solidarity, and that the queer liberation movement needs to rediscover the vitality of left wing organising.

Depicts the suffocating banality of heterosexist culture better than a lot of superficially similar films.

The character of Carol is both effortlessly smooth and barely holding it together, her wealth both frees and constricts her, and her devotion to her daughter complicates any attempt at a trivialising "just get out of there" reading even as 'getting out of there' ends up being both the solution she needs and the sacrifice she has to make.

Also Carol and Therese spend a lot of time staring at each other in silence and I found that neat.

Gorgeous film, Ralph Fiennes totally inhabits the role of a tense, stressed cardinal with a responsibility he doesn't want.

The contradiction of the church as holy and also human wonderfully presented.

Thought I knew what the twist was going to be, I did, and then I suddenly didn't.
