It totally could've gone a route where tensions continue to boil to a shocking climax that effectively warps the characters' reputations from what was established early on, but it doesn't even matter.

    This is a fucking movie.

It feels like he had all the elements in place to make a great movie but just didn't know which direction to take it in. Like it clearly wants to be more like The HostSnowpiercer, and Okja in terms of balancing its weirdo and straightforward elements in a sci-fi context, but he couldn't get either to the necessary degree. Da 5 Bloods feels like director Spike Lee trying to expand and experiment with different types or genres of movies while still retaining his exploration of the African American experience. On one hand, the ending didn’t move me as much as I thought. On the other hand, I can’t really blame Lulu Wang for that because this movie was based off her own life experiences.

My advice would be to use the money that you could use to see The Lion King or Mulan and watch this instead (if it isn’t playing near you right now, A24 is planning a nationwide release on August 2). Lulu Wang has the chance to become the Barry Jenkins of the Asian American community. Super fucking stoked to see Children of the New World.
