Menace II Society beautiful example of empathizing with people who have done evil things without glorifying their actions.  The characters feel real, like you actually live in the hard world they inhabit.  Their actions have consequences, but their circumstances are the product of the choices of others.  It’s tragic, but not without hope.

The whole thing is a powerful reminder that you can leave your past behind, but it never really leaves you.

    The Green Knight

    ★★★

The “hero’s journey” is a plot as old as storytelling itself, but real life is rarely so simple.  The act of going on a quest is only able to change us as much as we allow it to.  Ultimately, it is better to sacrifice everything to be made honorable by the journey than to remain immature and dishonorable.

I loved this message.   Honestly, I hated the pacing and the score; they both distracted more than they added.  But it earned its three stars from me for daring to challenge the hero’s journey, and for actually having something to say about it.

I have nothing to say about Dune that hasn’t been said already, but I’m very thankful that my local theater put this back on the big screen this week.  Easily a top 5 movie of all time for me.

Dune Part Two is simultaneously extravagant and disciplined.  It gives so much to its breathtaking visuals without sacrificing its pacing or commitment to its characters.  There are so many shots that leave me asking not only “how did they do…

    ★★★★½

I loved The Brutalist.  I expected a 3.5 hour award-bait movie to be too self-indulgent to get into, but i loved pretty much every second of it.

In so many ways, this is a story that been told before. A man goes through so much, and he has to reach for both deeper lows and greater heights to cope with it.  The world takes so much from him, but he allows it to remain taken - and not only from…
