Competently made, with nice camera angles and solid performances providing a window into papal electoral pageantry. But, was hoping there might be a little more revelation given the hype. It's really just Ballot Counting: The Movie.

László Toth is an artist-architect. For those who haven't worked in the industry— this is especially a rare type now in an over-romanticized profession that's mostly over-educated entrepreneurs who've lost their creative verve chasing Costco design commissions to pay the bills. The friction between artists and jobbers in architecture is depicted so perfectly in the film in the interactions between László and the Simpson character.…

Kitano flashes some of his signature directorial style here, but is clearly still experimenting with his formula of offbeat characters, bursts of shocking violence, and oddball humour.

He shows up about half way through as another prototype for his tough-guy/gangster persona (although this one a little more on the cruel side) and brings some heat after a somewhat tepid first half.

Enjoyable, but felt like a warmup for Sonatine - one of his masterpieces - just a few years later.…

This film kind of blew me away...so harsh and nasty and varnished with a dark, misanthropic humour. Edward G. Robinson gives a surprisingly moving performance as a gentle cashier / hobby artist whose virtuous nature is ruthlessly exploited at every turn. A film noir masterpiece.

I was curious to see this film draw a large crowd to the theatre on a frigid, rainy Thursday opening in my small-market town. It was an interesting contrast to the sparsely attended first-night screening of Tár a week earlier. Clearly, Martin McDonagh's Banshees sells as considerably more accessible to people on the surface than a seemingly esoteric "classical music drama" which, sadly, might keep people away. It's not hard to see that Banshees, which like Tár also poses questions…

The emotional wave of this film doesn’t fully hit until its final, quietest moments… and when it does, the chemistry of Nolan’s masterful construction and Cillian Murphy's brilliant performance destroys you.
