The Lego Batman Movie 2017
W movie.
I really appreciate how charming and funny this movie is, and how they manage to have very strong queer undertones without being malicious. The queer coded villains in the movie are not antagonized anymore than the toxic-masculinity embodying protagonist. They are all simply ridiculous.

A time capsule of the early 2000’s, exactly as vapid and ridiculous one would expect it to be.
Personally I enjoyed this movie (hugh dansy circa 2004 is just.. 🤌) and the ridiculousness seemed self aware enough.
The only real issue I have with this movie is the unnecessary and offhand racism. Why did Ella need a poc friend?? Why were there racist remarks against her?? Why is she the blandest and most unnecessary character in the whole movie???Honestly a shame in an otherwise perfectly stupid movie.

My Beautiful Laundrette 1985
Very different cinematic language than what I’m used to, so a few things were lost in translation and just seemed a bit odd. Despite that, the movie was able to keep an effervescent sense of charm. This movie left me feeling nostalgic for a time I’ve never witnessed and an overwhelming desire to email Stephen frears advising him to direct soft gay porn.
