A film that has more to say about Bradley Cooper than it does about Leonard Bernstein.
For the large swathes of the film concerned about Bernstein's sexual identity it never contextualises what the identity would mean at the time he was expressing it. That movie Bernstein seems comfortable with their identity isn't the issue. It's the film that seems uncomfortable with this comfort, branding it as a kind of selfishness. What we're left with is a kind of exteriority, an unknown and unknownable Bernstein. This could partially be the fault of the prosthetics which are sometimes excellent and sometimes merely distracting.
