Rewatch opened my eyes to it being pretty empty despite despite my rose tinted memory of this movie. Walk the Line belongs to a the special niche of Oscar bait biopics that use pretty shots and evocative performances from prestigious actors to tricks us into watching pre-biased with the signifiers of artistic seriousness.
For a film about a controversial, complex figure, the film seems to purposely stray from covering any topics that may have made a mainstream American 2000s audience too…
This movie has so much to offer, but ultimately felt completely cheapened by an overly intellectual “tragic” ending. Gays, we can smile and be happy while we’re alive — there is heat left in the universe, I promise.
An imaginative, personal exploration of a boy’s repressed grief and emotional turmoil living in a world on fire.
And an absolute joy to watch. This is peak cinema. The Boy and the Heron took me on a surrealist journey that had me completely hypnotized. What a rare treat to get to see animation of this calibre, so full of sensitive human touches, expressiveness, and immaculate personal style.
Instantly one of my favourites of his. Masterpiece. I will happily go to see in theatres again.
