The loose style makes the film a bit of a slog at times, but ultimately it's bizarrely charming and poignant enough to make it worth the watch.

This has probably been said before, but I feel like the genius of this film is that American Movie ends up achieving what Mark wanted to achieve through making Northwestern but couldn't.
It portrays the lives of people like Mark Borchardt in a sympathetic light. It makes stars out of every day people like Uncle Bill and Mike Shank.
Mark succeed, just not in the way he intended. But it ended up being his unique charisma and personality that drove the success, so is it any less significant?

This is a tough movie to recommend to people. Not least of which because the basic plot, the elevator pitch - man's wife commits suicide so he starts huffing gasoline and tries to get into remote control planes - is incredibly depressing.
