Avatar belongs right next to Fury Road on a list of the greatest action blockbusters of the 21st century. It’s sci-fi with dragons. “The bond” is a fascinating spiritual successor to The Force. For all the cheap mimicking of 9/11 imagery in countless movies, nothing has come closer to capturing and respecting that trauma than the destruction of Hometree. Quarritch is a terrifying villain — his “blast a crater in their racial memory” line is one for the ages.
