“You’ll never have me” was not only a badass thing for Alice to say, but also the truth. You can’t have the femme fatale (try as you might) because they belong only to themselves and their desires. Even when the femme fatale is abused and misused, they can never take away her essence. That’s why the femme fatale is so desired. And so hated by those who can’t love themselves wholly.

Those Whom Death Refused 1988
Our lead Bya is possibly the strongest yet softest woman I’ve ever seen on screen. I found out that a lot of the songs in the movie were real songs that were sung during the war in Guinea-Bissau. That felt really impactful. I’ve come to really enjoy the pacing in older films directed by Africans. Visually, the shots of them walking in straight lines (in order to avoid landmines) looked really good.
