"Find me if you love me."
The film opens with a monologue that'll instantly win you over. Suzhou River is surprisingly mellow despite the gritty atmosphere it presents us with. It's a film that excels in using the dingy riverside architecture as the backdrop for an urban fairytale where characters are yearning for a love that slips through their fingers the moment they catch a glimpse of it. Almost encapsulates the feeling of drifting through a dream with a dull ache in your heart. Utterly mesmerizing!
