Good movie but seriously compromised by being lit and graded in such a way that about half the time you are either unable to see the faces of the actors or to pick out any detail amidst a general muddled, murky blue tint, this peculiar creative decision drove me to distraction.
Instructive as to how hard it must be to make an actually good movie. You’ve got a decent high concept, you’ve got Denzel, Fichtner (mostly wasted), and a gleefully deranged Russell Crowe (although his dynamic with Denzel, who is giving a serious dramatic performance, has an unintentionally comedic Eddie Valiant-chasing-Judge Doom kind of vibe). You’ve got at least a couple of pretty good shots, but it all adds up to kind of a piece of shit. Really weak script, generally looks crummy (with a few momentary exceptions), if it wasn’t for Crowe hamming it up it’d barely leave an impression. Lots of wasted potential.
Jackie Chan pacifies the restive and ungrateful minorities of western China, then attempts regime change in the Roman Empire. No one bothers to wake up John Cusack. At least Adrien Brody seemed to be having fun.
The most striking thing about this is how deeply bored Zhirinovsky seems to be at almost all times. You very much get the sense that his entire political project was basically just a way for him to try and keep himself entertained.
