i liked the first half and felt like it was building up to an interesting exploration of the philosophical implications of there being two mickeys, but it ultimately fell very flat. the political commentary was surface level and very on the nose, and mark ruffalo’s character was literally a caricature and was largely painful to watch. especially in comparison to the biting social commentary of parasite, it felt like this had nothing important to say. ultimately was essentially waiting for…
in both sunrise and sunset, i thought celine was the star, as well as the more likeable character. here, jesse takes center stage for me, and ethan hawke gives his best performance of the trilogy.
never before has such a dialogue-driven film felt so dizzyingly mesmerizing to me. no one writes conversations like linklater: each interaction feels so authentic, so meaningful, and so real. his films have a unique knack of making you feel nostalgic for experiences you've never had.
before midnight is just wonderful, and is perhaps my favorite of the trilogy.
