Lost in Translation 2003
God, okay, Sofia Coppola is too honest about how white she is
I think she is far too honestly depicting her experiences of Tokyo, her fondnesses and her first-thought frictions. It is embarrassingly unfiltered.
There is a laser-focused commitment to the emotional atmosphere, unrestrained by decency and cross-cultural sensitivity with that early/mid-2000s panache.
Unfortunately, it succeeds in that the emotional atmosphere is delicately, improbably well-tuned. Even worse, apart from the runaway white gaze, her Tokyo is unmistakably Tokyo.

The writing & directing is a little heavy-handed in a way that grates against absolute MacDaddy Kōji Yakusho, who is note perfect and almost beats the funky Tokyo public toilets as the primary subject of Wim Wenders’ affections

Call Me by Your Name 2017

and even though you are not a man and you are not Jewish, the story told is so eviscerating you think you must have lived it in a past life

I loved the protagonist in Fleabag, but this film forgives Julie for…not being the worst person in the world?
The…
