God, okay, Sofia Coppola is too honest about how white she is

I think she is far too honestly depicting her experiences of Tokyo, her fondnesses and her first-thought frictions. It is embarrassingly unfiltered.

There is a laser-focused commitment to the emotional atmosphere, unrestrained by decency and cross-cultural sensitivity with that early/mid-2000s panache.

Unfortunately, it succeeds in that the emotional atmosphere is delicately, improbably well-tuned. Even worse, apart from the runaway white gaze, her Tokyo is unmistakably Tokyo.

    Lovely

The writing & directing is a little heavy-handed in a way that grates against absolute MacDaddy Kōji Yakusho, who is note perfect and almost beats the funky Tokyo public toilets as the primary subject of Wim Wenders’ affections

a sensory experience that keeps you awash in the swelling hum of summertime cicadas, the heat of close bodies, the smell of pheromones and the metallic taste of tongues bitten so hard they start to bleed

and even though you are not a man and you are not Jewish, the story told is so eviscerating you think you must have lived it in a past life

Nice on the eyes and gorgeous acting from Renate Reinsve

But this was the most infuriating thing I’ve ever watched

An emotionally stunted (albeit sympathetic) 29-year-old does whatever she feels like, impacts others, is not shown truly atoning, is shown to bear less consequences than the people she impacts, things seem to work out alright for her in the end

I loved the protagonist in Fleabag, but this film forgives Julie for…not being the worst person in the world?
