Maybe if I’d watched it when it came out, it would’ve had more of an effect on me. Look, there are certain things in it that I appreciated: that weird place with the old ladies where Don was being kept, those absurd sex scenes (although eventually the mask got to be too gimmicky), that scene with the lady dancing on the hood of the car. But eventually, it just got to be, yeah, too gimmicky. Too forced, almost. And Laura…

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters 1985
Utterly brilliant. The score, the cinematography, the telling of the story through oscillating between his life story and a vignette of his that somewhat corresponded with the current moment in his life, was just masterful. There were so many lines of dialogue that I wanted to write down because they were just so beautiful that they struck out to me. When I was watching this movie, I didn’t want it to end. And in the ending, you almost feel bad for this fascist maniac because he’s just so pathetic. It was just so, so good. Highly, highly recommend.

Atonement 2007
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Beautiful shots but unfortunately devoid of actual emotion. I was disappointed because I liked the beginning and found it entertaining but the whole beginning plot happens too fast, before we even get to know the characters at all. So how are we supposed to believe they’re actually in love? There was no romantic buildup. Just one brief scene of tension and then all of a sudden we’re supposed to believe they’re desperately in love?

The Unbearable Lightness of Being 1988
Oof. Great cinematography but vapid. Moral of the story: don’t marry a man-whore who somehow is able to fuck basically every woman that crosses paths with him (even some random woman watching him clean a window). Seriously, this movie seemed like more of a porn movie more than anything else (with some historical drama about being in Czechoslovakia during the Soviet Union and a bit of domestic tension. And a pig.) That being said, I’d love to feign a back injury to be “inspected” by Daniel Day-Lewis.
