Can style be substance? Can a film feel original and fresh if there are obvious and prevalent cinematic influences?

The plot of A GIRL is simple and straightforward, with only a few challenges presented in the non-uniform narrative structure (i.e. the Rockabilly dancing, Arash walking down the tunnel). Jarmusch is here, and one might be able to pick out some Lynch too. But this simplicity and these influences don't detract from the film, although they might for some.
