Heart warming and genuinely funny. A refreshing addition into the cannon of classic Black comedies, that manages to avoid many of the harmful stereotypes and tropes common within the genre. Keke Palmer shines as she does, and SZA proves herself a worthy costar.

I really love movies set in the antebellum period, I think there's such a beauty and purity in Blackness during that time. I also really love the way dialogue feels in movies that are adapted from plays, it has this spin, the circularness to it. The scene where they break out into song was absolutely mesmerizing. Like similar works of that time period, I think the original play and the movie as well does very good in conveying the duality many African Americans have with their Christian beliefs + traditional African religious practices. Although, I didnt like the twist where the spirit was actually real.
Beautifully shot and perfect combination of struggle, contention, and love.
