I think I was one of the only people laughing during this movie. I went in with no idea what it was about - and was about taken aback by the number of warnings before the movie. It was shocking and nuts and sometimes difficult to watch, but aLeo engaging and so ludicrously exaggerated that I loved it. And I really enjoyed the ensemble cast and how each of them took on roles of varying levels of importance across the three parts. Everything about the cult was my favorite (tears to purify the water) and AKA was amazing!!
This is the most blood and gratuitous violence I have ever, ever seen. I had my eyes covered for 70% of the movie. But I love that Demi Moore went there, I love the symbolism of how Sue took more than her share, how Elizabeth Sparkle tried to get back at her - even though they are one. And I love the long hallway in the apartment, the outlandish outfits and colors of Dennis Quaid. I talked about it for days, but could have done without the last 20 mins, and much of the gore!!
Mira’s longing was palpable. Anila, unrelenting, but also teetering on the brink of impropriety. But it’s Sri’s ability to read people, to understand their “key” is that I am still thinking about. What an incredibly important and dangerous skill that is so perfectly captured in his character. And the boys running after Mira on teachers day, the growing panic and fear I felt as that unfolded. Terrifying and so real.
I grew up in Evanston and loved John Cusack. I especially love that he puts his big sis in all his movies. Lloyd Dobler is an amazing character, just riveting and lovable and I hope he’s having a great life. And Lili Taylor and Joe Lies - iconic. Love!
