A classic! Anytime there’s a plot revolving a killer predator (Jaws, Jurassic Park, etc.), I am always thoroughly entertained. Alien takes it a step further as it strays away from the typical action adventure genre involving a deadly animal and dives straight into horror. *SPOILERS AHEAD* Jordan Peele’s creative genius comes out again! Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluya’s portrayal of brother and sister is very believable. The comedic elements complement the plot well and provide a nice break from the horrors happening on the ranch. I honestly wish the Gordy plot more directly tied in with the main plot but I appreciate the parallels drawn between the two predators (Gordy the celebrity Ape and the alien monster thing). The third act lost me a little bit but the dynamic characters and the disturbing subplot (Gordy) underlying the narrative is what makes this movie work.

The Black Phone 2021
A serial killer movie with a dash of paranormal is already interesting. Add the fact that the paranormal spirits in question are assisting our beloved protagonist makes me extra invested!! The child actors are absolutely brilliant. Madeline McGraw’s performance is especially impressive. Her portrayal of the witty, supernaturally gifted sister (who is far more clever than any of the adult characters in the film) really draws you in. The moments of violence are earned as they are used sparingly and they are not overly gory.
