    Crossroads

    ★★

Ah yes, the classic story of girl achieving her friend's dreams, set to Britney Spears singing hits from her classic 2001 album, Britney.

Perhaps one of the most cynical movies ever made. Thanks Sony Music and MTV Films for this modern masterpiece which I hope to one day recover from. 🙏

  • The Last Showgirl

    The Last Showgirl

    ★★

No real message to speak of, full of B-roll, script needed another pass, shot like an early Safdie Brothers movie, various plot cul-de-sacs including the A plot itself and probably should've been a 20 minute short film.

However - at the end of the day, it's 90 minutes of something new, shot on film, with brilliant performances from Jamie Lee Curtis and Pamela Anderson.

Hardly the tightest 90 minutes ever committed to film and barely the most interesting, but glad I saw it.

  • Mockingbird Don't Sing

    Mockingbird Don't Sing

    ★★

The best part of the film is where the protagonist bitchslaps a toddler. Other than that, Mockingbird Don't Sing is bizarre.

Was this meant to be a happy film? Uplifiting? Clever? Biographical? Funny? Sad? Traumatic? Thrilling? Dramatic? Horrific? It's every one of those, and terribly confusing as a result.

Unnerving due to moments of near-paedophilia, and hilarious due to moments of badly-chosen soundtrack. The soundtrack must have been an afterthought. Positivity to compliment fear at every turn just feels wrong instead of subversive after a while.

In fact, that could well be the film as a whole. Not subversive, just awkward.
