the big trouble with war movies; war is beautiful — not in its horror, monstrosity, those are not beautiful, but in its sheer visual spectacle. nothing matches war. this movie’s a brutal watch. didn’t care for the diplomat subplot. iirc the book’s about the individual soul-rending trauma war inflicts. +the book’s most impactful scene imo (where Paul returns from war only to break down when he realizes his countrymen still believe the great delusion of nationalism) is absent. does a great job at capturing the futility of wwi though. a real vibe killer of a flick.
