A very entertaining but tonally uneven action movie. One minute we’re rocking out to 2000s adult contemporary watching fighter jets, next we’re dealing with genocide and civil war. You can see the US taxpayer’s dollars in full force, with strong action, a functional if slightly miscast Owen Wilson performance and Hackman just bossing every scene he’s in. One of the better fighter jet scenes in movies when they’re being chased by the SAMs. It loses half a star because the final action scene is just a little too off the wall that it spoils what is generally a fairly grounded action outing.
The cynic in me says this came out after star wars and the same year as Alien, and yet is much too tame and ragged to deserve any real praise… and yet it’s an engaging, old fashioned sci fi tail that takes you an adventure with some engaging characters - even if we’re only barely boldly going to a galaxy far away…
A dazzling 80s sci-fi/horror romp that is fun, lively and ridiculous in the best way possible. A cast who is enjoying themselves make the interpersonal scenes engaging and meaningful - all brought together by nearly constant diegetic soundtrack that is popping. While it loses its way with an overly complicated plot in the final act, there’s really plenty to enjoy it.
Both charmingly cynical and sentimental, with performances that fulfil the complexities of the written characters - especially Hackman. You can see how Anderson’s style evolves and develops, with Grand Budapest refining his 2001 outing.
