Julija has the youthful yearning of just getting out and away somewhere, anywhere but where she is. She feels what Judy Garland makes us feel when she sings Somewhere over the Rainbow, wanting to be elsewhere.
Julija discovered this desire the same time as she becomes a keen observer of adult romantic desire, and she wants her mother to use the latter to get for them the former.

So many people reviewing this seem to miss the commentary (and director’s joke) in the aria performed at the end.
First of all the film is an endless parade of people in “power” yet the only one who is still heard is Callas at the end. And what does she sing?
