An interesting and ambitious attempt that remains at the level of ambition.
The comedy frequently fails to land. Many characters fail to possess consistency despite their one dimensional nature.
Simon Russell Beale is undoubtedly the standout performance. Jason Isaacs and Jeffrey Tambor offer consistency but not much is expected of them. Buscemi's typical brilliance is not found, and it is noticeable.
The comedy throughout is oftentimes limp. However, the persistent ridiculousness of the comedy actually plays a better role in highlighting the true horror of the film's subject. The weakly spread and poorly offered humour feels apt in the face of the Red Terror's despair.
