A decent screen adaptation of a good musical. There’s some good stuff happening in the performances, but the theatricality is lost on screen. It feels bizarre and doesn’t serve the material well. The sound design is good but you don’t get struck by the music in the same way as you would theatrically. Wouldn’t watch again.
22 years on I’d forgotten most of it. It’s best when it’s being sincere. Both leads deliver great performances, and it leaves you guessing as to where it’s all going to end up. It’s a bit tame now by today’s standards. If it was made today you cant help but feel like it might be a bit more political. A bit more critical of the younger generations. I’m glad it’s not. Well worth a revisit.
A surprisingly pleasing script and great performances. Di Niro goes gentle and Hathaway goes a bit more Miranda Priestly. Tears flowed and laughs happened, worth a watch.
A much anticipated return to everyone’s favourite Londoner. This film is packed full of Hamstead property porn and gives a real “how the other half live” vibe to anyone who’s ever ACTUALLY lived in London. That aside, this comedy packs real emotional punch. The first tears fell in the opening 20 minutes and continued to flow. The franchise has aged alongside its lead protagonist and its audience.
