Unbelievable scenes of Ireland, brilliant shift from comedy to the bleak and dark. Confronts interesting dynamic between living in the moment vs. obsessing over legacy and leaving something behind. Excellent portrayal of the weight of the passing of time and the existential burdens people face. Displays the power of human relationships vs the belief in art to transcend momentary existence.  The constant sense of isolation is incredibly effective.

Ryan Gosling excellent as a man who becomes bad by doing good. Absolutely loved the score, created a dark atmosphere that perfectly encapsulates that feeling of a late night car drive. Not totally convinced by the relationship between Driver and Irene, certainly not to the extent that he was willing to die for her. Thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.

Watched another Akira Kurosawa film (Ran) ages ago which I enjoyed, but this was even better. Super allegorical, investigation of multiple realities, subjective nature of “truth” and the self- interest which plagues man. Cinematography really interesting, and doesn’t feel too dated despite it’s 1950 release.
