Possibly the worst way to start a lazy sunday movie day.

This is my first encounter with the work of Peter Watkins, and the experience has driven me to write my first review on this site.

Punishment Park is a film that could have been created in the last few years and not appear out of place.
Interviews with Law Enforcment and convicted persons could have been lifted from the streets of the U.S in 2020.

    Cold, detached, apathetic.

Alan Clarke's short about violence in Northern Ireland during the troubles is a concise and withdrawn form of film making.

Almost feeling part documentary, we witness 18 murders performed in various locations and at various times of the day. Nothing is told about these murders, their perpetrator, victims, motive or broad location. Holy moly - Jack Warner putting his name front and centre on producing credits - the money leaps out of the screen.
That shot of a giant stock counter at the top of a grad staircase with crowds clamouring before it it's breathtaking and feels like a sibling to metropolis in terms of scale.

The narrated passages between years that bookmark chapters of the movie feel like they're ahead of their time, they're so stylish with montage editing as infotainment.…

Didn't realise the dead end kids were another type of little rascals with their whole stick, enjoyed most of their scenes (boner used to be slang for dumb-dumbs) but by the time we get to the finale it feels to irrating at 180° tone wise.
Cagney is ever charismatic in this and the scene with the kids in particular the basketball match.
Bogart is Bogart, playing a typical typecast of tough as nails clubowner.
Pat O'brien is a square through and through, typical Catholic priest who wants everyone on the same righteous moral compass as himself.

Timeless, the most perfect Christmas movie - most perfect movie infact.

Stewart's eyes as his life nearly falls apart are terrifying.
