Still an effective film some 25 years on. Funny too.

Quite decent overall. Some flashback sequemces stronger than others, quite believable in terms of characters. Moving in places. Not nearly as heavy on social/political criticism as one might have expected given the premise. Much left unresolved, though I suppose that's how these things go.

Quite a good mystery film but one that suffers from excessive length and lack of focus. It's strength lies in its portrayal of the turbulence of Japan's post-war transition from semi-feudal militarism to liberal capitalism, and the extensive social disruption which results. As a crime story it is relatively compelling. Rentarō Mikuni is excellent as the roguish Takichi Inutai, but, due to a jump in the film's timeline, he is largely and unfortunately absent from the middle third. Quite worth watching.

Not exactly a visionary work of art but an effective and funny satire which paints a portrait of an era that the people in charge would prefer you forget. Best viewed alongside "Generation Kill" if you're looking for a realistic and unglamorous picture of the modern American soldier.
