It felt like Inception on acid, with punch-you-in-the-teeth humor and a blindsiding amount of poeticism. Worse, it feels like something I might cook up after waking up from a long, convoluted dream. This movie sticks to your ribs. There's a threshold between realism and suspension of disbelief that movies, even military ones, inherently have to cross in the name of storytelling. The Covenant keeps to the realism side with loving dedication. Any wandering it does into suspension of disbelief can be attributed to the medium in which it's made. Fantastic lighting, good storytelling with a clear objective: find the girl. Compelling in the way Thom Yorke always is, by tapping into subliminal human longing of the soul. How do we get to the top? Do we dance with the rest of the world's flow and hope it gets us there? Do we climb over them? When we're knocked down, again and again, how many times are we doing to get back up before it's all too much?
