  I knew nothing about this going into it - somehow avoided plot info until it came across streaming options today. So for the first few minutes, I thought “Wow, a movie about a dad trying to connect with his teenage daughter. This will be great!” Turns out that is not what this movie is about.

  I hadn’t seen this when it originally came out. Then I had no interest in watching it during the pandemic. It crossed my mind in the last few days and I thought I could probably handle it at this point. Wow. Soderbergh and crew nailed pretty much every detail of what was to come 8 years later huh?

  This was 1/3 them running in slow motion, 1/3 the villain just yelling, and 1/3 thinking one of our heroes was going to die. Between all that and the 400 weird music drops, this just isn’t my thing. And maybe Marvel just isn’t my thing anymore either. I feel like I’ve said this for every Marvel movie since ENDGAME, but I only go to these anymore because my daughter wants me to take her.

  This movie is still great. I don’t really understand how lots of people changed their minds about it when we all seemed to like it 19 years ago. I get that the manic pixie dream girl trope was overdone and there are problematic dimensions to it. But GARDEN STATE is so much more than just that (and does it count for anything that Natalie Portman was the best MPDG?). She’s wonderful in this. So is Braff. So is Sarsgaard. I…
