Just like a great freeform jazz solo, Soundtrack to a Coup d’État is chaotic, occasionally challenging to follow and you’re not always quite sure where it’s going, but the end result is something really special. It isn’t for everyone, and relies on a certain level of assumed knowledge going in, but as someone who likes jazz and has a special interest in Cold War history, this well and truly tickled my fancy.

Weirdly this works as a comedy as well as an attempt at a semi-serious portrayal of Trump’s early career. That being said, while this might appear to be a Trump movie, it’s really about Roy Cohn, one of Cold War-era America’s foremost villains and a trusted fixer for pretty much every right-wing asshole you can think of from that period. Good thriller with some great performances. Sister Agnes curtsying after dropping the big revelation about Cardinal Tremblay followed by Tedesco hitting the vape was an all-timer of a scene. Loved the ending in no small part that it has seemingly sent tradcaths into complete shambles. Overall very solid entry in the “thrillers for dads to fall asleep on the couch to” genre.
