Between this and Calvary, I wonder if the wrong McDonagh brother gets all the love. The limber screenplay crackles every minute while it turns the buddy cop routine inside out. The performances are rich and sly. Dynamite dark comedy top to bottom. “I’m Irish, sir. Racism is part of my culture.”

Much to enjoy here: The crisp escalation of the body count, the peppery quips, the cat and mouse plotting. Jack Quaid delectably toying with his nice guy persona, embodied in that split-second shit-eating smirk after saying “This must be a lot to process.” Sophie Thatcher’s grimly funny unpacking of her predicament. A fun movie. Made for an interesting accidental double bill with Godard’s Vivre Sa Vie.

On paper this movie’s formal constraint might seem restrictive; what’s remarkable is how in Ross’ hands, it becomes not only liberating but generative: there are images and sequences here that resemble no other film I’ve ever seen. Genuinely feels as though it’s being remembered or dreamed before your eyes.

Breezy delectable pulp about how much fun it is to fuck and ratfuck your colleagues, abetted by Soderbergh’s slick punch-drunk visual sensibility and a faultless ensemble making a meal out of Koepp’s trashy thriller script. B+ romp.
