While watching this film, I was reminded of a review that called Promising Young Woman a dishonest film. It is a dishonest film, and so is Saltburn. Paired with the way that Emerald Fennell spoke about both films during their respective press releases, I think it is becoming clear that she is a dishonest director. There's no conviction here, just visual spectacle that dissipates almost immediately.

Just watch The Talented Mr. Ripley instead.

It was interesting watching this film after a lot of the noise around it had died down.

Ansel Elgort is completely wooden. Mike Faist's rising star begins its ascent. Rachel Zegler does her damn best to keep the pathos of the film alive, but the strain shows, especially when she has to act opposite Elgort. Ariana DeBose is pitch perfect and deserved every moment of recognition she received for her Anita.

But, while the performances are a mixed bag, the film is beautifully put together. And a reminder of how much the standards of mainstream film have slipped into the gutters.

Let's pray this signals the closing of Quentin Tarantino's career. Tarantino's constant pining for a time that never actually existed is typical, as is his exploitative storytelling. What is atypical about OUATIH, and what seems to have attracted so many critics to the film, is his supposed emotional vulnerability with the film's naked nostalgia. Juxtaposing this nostalgia for 1960's Hollywood with the brutal Manson murders is apparently what makes Tarantino a genius-level auteur. I think it just solidifies his position…

Those adolescent years where real life is right around the corner can be anxiety-inducing at the best of times. At the worst of times it can feel like a horror movie. Shiva Baby perfectly captures that anxiety, as Danielle attends a tense funeral that threatens to boil over (but, in keeping with the film’s more realistic approach, never does). Stuffed into a house with condescending relatives and current and ex-lovers, Danielle never quite gets a chance to catch her breath. But…
