Raging Bull isn’t a boxing film. It’s a character study into a man so sexually frustrated, fired up by insecurities and jealousy, that the only way to seek catharsis is through brutal physical punishment - boxing. La Motta breaks down eventually, and in the final scene he, through his own egotistical eyes, is redeemed. But as a viewer he is still the same man, and that’s what makes Raging Bull so good - it’s not a heroic underdog story with a redeeming character arc, it’s a linear, bloodthirsty, sadistic observation of hyper-masculinity.

Unapologetically unique, but romantic interactions between characters are just so difficult to watch

Unbelievable in every way. The cinematography and world-building in this absolutely engrossed me, the story engrossed me, the performances engrossed me, and a lot of it was actually gross.

However, I must admit there was a lack of chemistry between Ellen and Thomas’ relationship, which isn’t ideal when that bond should be a vital part of the film.
