In my opinion it had nothing to do with the book.
Disappointing in execution and changed storyline. Also the main characters cast was less than ideal.
I really could not understand why they changed the topic and complex storyline of the book into something this blunt.
Even something easy like a mushroom trip was poorly executed with a few colorful fireflies.
Where was the slow progression of his psychosis, him living in the forest, his search for a reversion of the effects, all the sustantial details?
They should have made this into a TV-Show, that would have made much more sense.
