The Holcroft Covenant 1985
Ok. Call me crazy but this ludicrous thing- badly scripted, acted, directed, whatever, you name it- in it's calamity still holds something potent. Maybe it's the possibilities of the plot, the story arc, but you can tell Frankenheimer was going for something, and though he didn't get there (not even close) this is one of those glorious failures where you can still see the direction it was heading in.

No doubt Bernstein was a marvellous composer and conductor. The music dotted through the film is lush, compelling. There’s a scene right toward the end of the film, which portrays the sharpness of his ear and hand, and goes for about three minutes. Unfortunately, the preceding bulk of the film doesn’t go any deeper into the creative process. Okay, not easy to do in cinema. Occasionally there are a few nicely worded quotes about birds and singing, or short scenes…
