  It feels like there’s a lot of reflexive contrarianism regarding the value of the genre of generic action movies (of which ”Mission Impossible: Fallout“ is an exemplar) in a similar way to how people have contorted themselves in recent years to defend the value of pop music. While I’m certain the stunts and explosions were very hard to do, I just can’t help wonder why all that effort was spent on a script as uninspired as this one was. Spoilers…

  I appreciate that Tom Cruise has done a lot to bring people back to theatres. His pre-roll gratitude to theatrical audiences in both “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One” and “Top Gun: Maverick” is perhaps the only believable thing about him. The timing of this movie also has been somewhat fortuitous as well, coinciding roughly with both the surge in interest in novel forms of AI as well as the dramatic loss of a submersible.
