12 Angry Men 1957
When people tell you a film is classic cinema, this should be the standard they are referring. This film will grip you from start to finish, and I can't quite put my finger on why. It might be the compelling writing, the realism of the situation, maybe the stakes at hand. I felt I was in that room, in agony for a boy facing a death sentence that we the audience see only for a moment at the start. "Must-watch" seems a lacking label, this is film education of the highest tier.

This is a film that I need to watch 3 more times to absorb, not out of complexity (though there are levels here) but for my poor little brain to accept it fully. What a fascinating and succinct story.

Tokyo Godfathers 2003
I had been holding out on watching this film for years, worried that it'd been overhyped - man was I wrong to worry. This film is a delight, then devastating, then delightful again. I was hypnotized by the beautiful movement and expressiveness of the animation. The story is whimsical and intriguing, with a climax that is so engaging I wanted to watch it again right then and there. A new holiday staple.
