The story sticks so closely to the kids’ day-to-day perspectives that you get sucked in, feeling as if you’re once again living in the goofy mind of a 6 year old. It’s surprising how quickly you can flashback and relate to sharing ice cream cones and hiding under stairwells— and being peer pressured into doing something stupid. The lavender backdrop of the motel gives the entire story a specific tone of appeared comfortablity, not to mention the other colors in…

Although the film’s ending seemed inconclusive, LUCE brought up some important issues we see in today’s social culture— the blindly overprotective, middle to upper class parent figure; the lack of privacy in young adults and whether or not that’s justified in order to prevent harm; the pressure and expectations placed on teachers to catch early signs of violence in young adults; forced stereotypes and unfair treatment as a result. Jennifer Lawrence’s Polish doppelganger debuts in this alternative interpretation of Romeo and Juliet (but with an age gap and more alcohol). Either the main characters could have been further developed or I just can’t empathize with a film noir infused, hot-for-teacher romance. Not for all audiences, this film’s intense rape scenes (plural) made me leave the theater in order to collect myself. The director’s choice to accurately depict these scenes as parallel to true events of the time period was hard to digest. The story was beautifully paced, with thoughtful character development. The visuals didn’t rely on dialogue to tell the story, which ultimately made this movie more powerful. You can feel every discomfort the characters go through.
