archival footage can only tell so much about a historical period, especially when history can be erased, destroyed, or never recorded to begin with. Panh uses claymation to fill in these gaps in history from growing up under the khmer rouge, resulting in a deeply personal exploration of grief, loss, and memory. a haunting documentary that i’ll remember for a long time.
