I found it refreshing that every character in this film is severely mentally ill, and it’s not romanticized or made attractive in any way. Despite how bizarre the film is, that actually grounded it substantially.

“I’ll see you in your dreams” — the threat of the id’s aggressive sexual impulses. A young man comes of age, ready to step into adult sexuality, and has to choose between the persecutory object and the loving object. He discovers his capacity for sadomasochistic object relations, and needs to integrate it as a part of his adult sexuality. The woman’s apartment is filled with rage and death, because that’s what her psyche is filled with. He chooses love instead. Beautiful and bizarre!!
This is exactly what it is like to be a beautiful, smart, spiritual woman, who is afraid to really know it. To know it means to stop chasing after becoming like your mother, to stop being a little girl forever lost to herself. She continues to punish herself with her mother’s contempt and cruelty, from the inside.

Ever since I was a melancholic little girl, I yearned for a gothic romance like this. Edgar Allen Poe, the Brontë Sisters, and Bram Stoker are weeping tears of joy in the afterlife. Society should be forewarned that this film will unleash hitherto unknown levels of vampire kink — UNTOLD even compared to post-Twilight series.
