ARGHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes making beautiful things is enough & Chloe Zhao knows. So touching, tender and peaceful, while at the same clouded by a sadness.
My god I love when a landscape gets the shine it deserves.
A beautiful, complex and poetic reflection on the role of (material) cultural heritage and collective memory in a people’s identity and pride, as well as critical commentary on the geopolitical interests in the supposed decolonization of the artworld. Diop’s choice to give a voice to the Beninese artworks gave a mythical touch to the film, and added a new contribution to a very relevant discussion. It also lay bare the many complex ways through which colonialism still leaves its mark…
H O T & a much needed female gaze-y erotic thriller that balances power play and sexuality without falling into the cliche of abusive relationships that has already gotten wayyyyyyyyy too much screentime.
However: at times repetitive, too explicit (dog reference etc) and with a rather anticlimactic ending. But still H O T !
(the ‘I’m gonna pee’ part is so real)
